KELLI SLOWLY BECAME aware of the sound of loud whispers, but she couldn’t find the energy or desire to escape from the dark corner into which she had crawled. This safe haven was a place she always used to flee from the harsh realities of life.

Unfortunately, someone was determined for her to resurface into the real world, because they ceased any attempt at trying to be quiet and began using a louder, no-nonsense voice to get her attention. “Mrs. Sharp. Are you awake? Can you hear me?”

After a couple of failed attempts, Kelli finally opened her eyes, but even with them wide open, her immediate surroundings were cloudy and out of focus. She tried blinking to clear up her muddied vision, but that didn’t help so she closed them again and kept them that way for a few seconds before trying again. The second time, things were a little clearer but still murky and gray. The only thing she could make out very well was a bulky form hovering off to the side of the bed. She stared at it for a couple of seconds before an excruciating pain in her left temple forced her to close her eyes again.

“Mrs. Sharp!” This insistent command was followed with a jarring jab to her shoulder. “Wake up. We need to talk.”

Since there had never been a day of peace in Kelli’s life, she wasn’t surprised when someone grabbed her shoulders and began shaking. While it might have been his intention to wake her, the movement from the shake made her head rock back and forth, and that in turn sent a jarring pain down her neck and into every single nerve in her spine. It now felt as if her brain might very well explode and gush out of her ears.

One of the many lessons she had learned during her thirty years of marriage to Mark was that there was nowhere to hide if someone wanted to find you badly enough, so in spite of the pain, Kelli forced her eyes open. For some reason, the large form was now leaning in so close, all she could see was another set of eyes staring into hers.

This surprised the person leaning over the bed, enough so that he stepped back and away from the bed railing. With him now back and out of her face, he was no longer a fuzzy blob.

The stranger was a nice-looking man in a rough sort of way. His hair was closely shaven to his scalp. His clothes were rumpled but clean. His nose was long and sharp. That, added with his pointed chin, made for a tough, chiseled appearance. Two bright, intelligent blue eyes were the only things that softened his otherwise hardnosed expression. Even though he was frowning, it was easy to see he usually smiled because there were laugh lines deeply etched into the corners of his eyes.

Kelli and the stranger sized each other up for an unusually long time before he finally cleared his throat.
